How IBT Works in Ireland
Initial Basic Training (IBT) is the mandatory RSA course every learner motorcyclist in Ireland must complete before sitting the driving test. Here's the full path, module by module.
The Path
The path to your licence
- 1
Pass the motorcycle theory test
Book through the official RSA theory test service before you apply for a learner permit.
- 2
Apply for a learner permit

- 3
Complete your IBT course

- 4
Get your Certificate of Satisfactory Completion

- 5
Hold your permit for 6 months
Mandatory waiting period before you're allowed sit the practical driving test.

Curriculum
What you actually learn
Off-road basics
Bike controls, slow-speed handling, manoeuvres and machine familiarisation in a controlled area.
Urban riding
Town traffic, junctions, roundabouts, lane discipline and dealing with other road users.
Rural & higher-speed riding
National roads, cornering, overtaking and reading the road at speed.
Hazard awareness
Observation, anticipation, defensive positioning and reacting to risk.
Only RSA-approved instructors count
By law, IBT lessons must be delivered by an RSA-approved instructor. Training taken with anyone else — no matter how experienced — does not count toward your licence and won't be recognised at the driving test.
